Stormy Kromer makes plenty of hats, but their most famous is undoubtedly the Original Stormy Kromer Cap. This design has been around for over a century, and it’s easy to see why it’s still so popular today.
In this review, I’ll be taking a closer look at the Original Stormy Kromer Cap to see how it stacks up.
I’ve now used the Original Stormy Kromer Cap in a variety of different settings, and I can say with confidence that it’s an effective piece of cold weather gear.
The hat is made from a wool/nylon blend with an internal flannel cotton lining, and it does an excellent job of trapping heat.
I’ve worn it in temperatures as low as -15 degrees Fahrenheit, and it kept my head comfortable and warm.
The flexible bill is the appropriate length that conforms to the contours of your face. It provides just enough sun protection for those days when the sun breaks through, but not too much that it hinders your visibility. The bill provides plenty of clearance so you can easily wear a pair of sunglasses when needed.
Nowhere is the quality of the Original Stormy Kromer Cap more evident than in its comfort. The hat is exceptionally soft and not itchy. The ear flaps are lined with a soft fabric and can be easily adjusted to provide a tight or looser fit. I’ve worn this hat for hours at a time in sub-zero temperatures, and it’s never been uncomfortable
If you want a Stormy Kromer that fits you perfectly, you will need to take your time and measure your head accurately. You may want to enlist the help of another person to make sure you get your head measurements right. Otherwise, you may end up going through one round of ordering and then returning before you get the right size.
Once you have your measurements, Stormy Kromer has a very helpful sizing chart video that will help you choose the right size. You can watch that by clicking here.
Also, the choice of colors is excellent. I opted for the black because I wanted a versatile hat that I could easily wear in different situations.
Moving on from the physical aspects of the product, I want to highlight some of the other benefits of owning a Stormy Kromer.
First, Stormy Kromer is one of the few manufacturers that still makes their products in the USA. That means that you are supporting American workers when you purchase one.
Second, their manufacturing quality really shines through in how well they are made and their attention to detail. There are few hats I would say are made to last a lifetime, but at this point, I feel like this is one of them.
Third, when it comes to winter hats, there are few that I would consider as comfortable as the Stormy Kromer’s Original Cap. After wearing some of my other hats and beanies for a day, I’m more than ready to take the hat off and give my head a thorough rub. Fortunately, I have never experienced that with Stormy Kromer’s cap.
Probably the only major downside of this hat that I can think of is caring for it. It’s easy enough to spot clean, but due to the wool fabric, Stormy Kromer labels it for dry cleaning only. For people like me, dry cleaning means that clothes will never be completely cleaned. So, I try to spot shot anything that I can see on the hat, and then just hang it up to make sure it fully dries after wearing it.
The hat is also a bit pricier than some other options on the market. However, for how well it’s made and how comfortable it is to wear, I think the price was well worth it.
Overall, I’m extremely happy with my purchase of the Original Stormy Kromer Cap, and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a top-quality winter hat.
